A Non-specialist's Comment on Extraterrestrial Life
نویسنده
چکیده
The affirmative statement of the existence of extraterrestrial life is tentatively raised to the status of a principle. Accordingly, Fermi's question is answered and the anthropic principle is shown to be fal-sifiable. The timescale for the development of life on Earth and the age of the universe are the fundamental quantities upon which the arguments are framed.

How Will We React to the Discovery of Extraterrestrial Life?
How will humanity react to the discovery of extraterrestrial life? Speculation on this topic abounds, but empirical research is practically non-existent. We report the results of three empirical studies assessing psychological reactions to the discovery of extraterrestrial life using the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) text analysis software. We examined language use in media coverage ...
متن کاملDetecting Patterns of a Technological Intelligence in Remotely Sensed Imagery
Originally, the goal in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) was to detect the existence of extraterrestrial life by their radio frequency (microwave) emissions [1]. More recently its scope has expanded to include the search for extraterrestrial intelligence at optical frequencies [2], and the search for extraterrestrial artifacts (SETA) in our solar system [3, 4]. This paper is ...
متن کاملComment and Reply Comment on "Origin of a late Eocene to pre-Miocene buried crater and breccia lens at Fohn-1, North Bonaparte Basin, Timor Sea: A probable extraterrestrial
Gorter and Glikson (2000) proposed that the Fohn-1 structure in the Timor Sea north of Australia probably is an impact structure. Examination of their evidence reveals that it is almost impossible to confirm any of their conclusions, as the authors do not provide sufficient detail of their experimental methods. Problems with the presentation of both seismic and geochemical data cast further do...
متن کاملMultiplication of microbes below 0.690 water activity: implications for terrestrial and extraterrestrial life.
Since a key requirement of known life forms is available water (water activity; aw ), recent searches for signatures of past life in terrestrial and extraterrestrial environments have targeted places known to have contained significant quantities of biologically available water. However, early life on Earth inhabited high-salt environments, suggesting an ability to withstand low water-activity....
متن کاملExtraterrestrial life: Life on Mars – then and now
The recent claim to have discovered evidence of extraterrestrial life on a meteorite from Mars is not compelling, but the study nevertheless has useful heuristic value.
